1962 - The Beatles chose Ringo Starr as the replacement for Pete Best, who had been playing with the group for over 2 years.

1966 - The Monkees released their first single, "Last Train to Clarksville.”

1974 - The Ramones performed their first gig at New York's CBGB.

1975 - Peter Gabriel announced his departure from Genesis. Hiring from within, drummer Phil Collins was selected as the new lead singer after the group auditioned more than 400 candidates for the job.  Collins had even coached some of the prospective new singers.

1977 - Elvis Presley died of coronary arrhythmia in Memphis, Tennessee at the age of 42.

1983 - Paul Simon and actress Carrie Fisher were married. The couple divorced in 1985.
