1954 - Elvis Presley inked his first recording contract with Sun Records, and promptly quit his job as a truck driver.

1959 - Alan Freed began a 13 week Rock & Roll show on ABC-TV.

1962 - The Rolling Stones made their performance debut at London’s Marquee Club.

1969 - Blind Faith embarked on their first American tour with a sold-out show at New York's Madison Square Garden.

1992 - A memorial dedicated to Buddy Holly was unveiled in Dallas, Texas.

1992 - With an outstanding warrant issued in St. Louis, Missouri, Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose was arrested at New York's JFK airport. The wild singer was wanted on charges stemming from a 1991 Guns N' Roses concert.

1996 - Jonathan Melvoin, a touring keyboardist for the Smashing Pumpkins, was found dead in a New York City hotel of a heroin overdose.

1997 - Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis broke his wrist in a motorcycle accident in Los Angeles, California.
