1959 - Joan Baez made her first  recording, a duet with Bob Gibson at the Newport Folk Festival.

1969 - David Bowie released his album Space Odyssey.

1970 - The Who released "Summertime Blues,” a cover of the Eddie Cochran hit.

1979 - The Neil Young concert film Rust Never Sleeps debuted at Westwood, California’s Bruin Theatre. The live album was released simultaneously.

1995 - Mike Mills of R.E.M. underwent emergency intestinal surgery in Germany, forcing the band to cancel seven shows on their European tour.

1996 - Beck performed a surprise set at Lollapalooza '96 in St. Louis, Missouri.

1998 - MTV premiered a special profile of the Beastie Boys called Beastiography.

2000 - Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich was the first to testify at a U.S. Senate hearing focusing on copyright law issues surrounding free music file sharing on websites such as Napster and MP3.com.
